Hello Class of '67. As I reflect at the years spent at A & D, I am thankful for the dedicated teachers that molded me in the arts & architecture. I am presently an architect & director of the Design & Construction Department for the Administration for Children's Services agency in New York City. I am saddened to hear that a fine art institution is falling to mediocrity due to funding irresponsibility. My regards to all who have kept in touch: Hamlett Wallace, Raymond Plumey, Marla Appelbaum, Berni Pollack (Faye). Seasons Greetings 2004.

Yvonne Fitzner, President of the Alumni, received a phone call from alumni VP Michael Cheverino this morning with the tragic news that the firefighter father of Sean Engeldrum, 18 (2004), and Royce Engeldrum, 16 (2006), has been killed in Iraq. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. "Christian Engeldrum, whose 9/11 heroism was captured in a historic Daily News photograph, is the first city employee to die in Iraq since the war began. As Ground Zero burned, Engeldrum was photographed steadying a ladder that another firefighter climbed to hang a torn American flag from a bent light pole. On Monday, the courageous father was part of a convoy of Army National Guardsmen protecting a bridge from insurgents fleeing Fallujah when his unit came under attack and his Humvee rolled over a bomb." The cover from today's Daily News and the link to the story is attached below. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/257893p-220838c.html http://www.nydailynews.com/

I was a cartooning major in the graduating Class of 1968. (My year book photo was misplaced among the "Display" majors.) I chanced upon this Website some time ago; unfortunately, not in time for the "Grand Reunion." Today, I attended the rally to save our school and had the pleasure of meeting other alumni, Silvio Martinez (Class of "66") and Liz Sheehan (Class of "70"). I stood between them both physically and chronologically! I see in the guest book -- and elsewhere on the site -- some names that are familiar: Matthew DeMayo, Steve Shub, Bruce J. Gallagher, Beverly A. Colon, David Tommasino, Cora Polakowski Weis, Mr. Thomas Naegele and Ms. Sheila Geist (the last two being faculty members). I hope all you guys are doing well.

I am Evelyn Penido, an alumna from 2002. I am very concerned with the events that are undergoing at my beloved High School of Art and Design. I believe we, the students and faculty along with volunteers, need to act quick to save the school. Saving the school takes much more than just wanting the space back. It takes determination and a genuine desire from the current students to learn and fight for their dreams. It takes commitment from the teachers as well as effort to give their all and teach their best, preparing the students to face not only the future but the present. It takes courage from all of us to take hold of the challenge which we have been given. It takes more than words, it takes action. As I walked around the school, two days ago, I saw essays written by my classmates on the wall. I was glad to see their writing which brought me memories, but at the same time I was shocked that the new students haven't written something wall worthy to replace the 3 years old essays by alumni. Not to mention the graffiti all over. Do the students want to be there? How selective is the school? So many more questions come to me. Sadly I also saw the elementary school materials on the second floor. We need to unite and stand firm with the purpose reclaiming our lost space and renewing the school. Thank you for all the emails! Lets continue fighting and more... Evelyn Penido, Class of 2002.

Sign our petition to SAVE THE HIGH SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN! (See story on our home page.) Tell your friends to sign as well. Pre-K children from adjacent P.S. 59 should not be given classrooms in our school! Art & Design students deserve the same great art education we alumni had all these years. Let's not let them down. Now is the time to raise your voices and be heard -- or our school will die a slow death. Volunteers and donations will also be appreciated. Vocational Education should be a right, not a privilege. 2006 is the school's 70th birthday -- will it still be there then?

Wish you had yearbooks posted from 1983-1986. I spent and mispent some of the best years at A&D. My brother John Sierra had so of the best years of his short life there. He is no longer with us.. Does anyone remember the insane production of Hair!!!! Unfortunately, I didn't graduate I left early, but made great friends and learned alot.. Anyone remember Blend?? Rene? Mike Hambucci, Joe Petrillo, Sabina & Joanne. One thing I remember most and fondest was the terrace. Headbangers on one side and b-boys and writers on the other. We all came together and chilled regardless.. Orange Park, Bagel Nosh.. Pearl Paint.. Anyone want to holla please do. I was only known as John's sister for the first year.. Those were incredible times.. Peace and Love to you all....

I can't believe it took me this long to discover the A&D website. I have very fond memories of my HS years. Looking back on it now, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend such a special school. I attended A&D from 1960-63. We were the first class to graduate from the then new building. I would love to hear from anyone and catch up on old times.
